Summer in Sandpoint: Keeping Up With Laundry During Tourist Season
Summer in Sandpoint hits differently. The population doubles, the lake fills up, the trails get busy, and suddenly everyone is going through clothes at twice the normal rate. Sunscreen, sweat, lake water, campfire smoke — summer is hard on laundry.
For locals, this means your laundry routine probably needs to scale up too. Here’s how to stay on top of it without losing your mind.
Why Summer Laundry Is Different
Summer laundry comes with unique challenges compared to the rest of the year:
- Volume increases. More outdoor activities = more outfit changes per day.
- Stains are harder. Sunscreen, grass, dirt, and lake water all require more attention than everyday wear.
- Fabrics are more delicate. Swimwear, athletic wear, and lightweight fabrics need gentler handling.
- Timing matters more. Leaving sweaty or damp clothes in a pile too long leads to mildew and set-in stains.
Wash Sooner, Not Later
The number one summer laundry mistake is letting the pile grow. Sweat and sunscreen break down fabric fibers over time and set stains permanently. The rule of thumb: anything damp or sweaty gets washed within 24 hours whenever possible.
This is especially true for swimwear. Chlorine and lake water both degrade elastic if left to dry in the suit. Rinse it immediately and wash it within a day.
The Wash Dry Fold Option
Summer is when our Wash Dry Fold service gets the most use — and for good reason. When you’re spending your days at the lake, on the trails, or at the farmer’s market, the last thing you want to spend your evening doing is laundry.
Drop everything off at Ponderay Laundromat, and we handle it. Clean, folded, and ready within 24 hours at $1.75/lb ($15 minimum). Many of our summer regulars drop off on their way to the lake and pick up on the way home the next day.
For Vacation Rental Hosts
If you’re running an Airbnb or vacation rental in the Sandpoint area, summer is your busiest season — and turnover laundry is the bottleneck. Sheets, towels, and linens for back-to-back bookings add up fast.
We work with local hosts and property managers regularly. Commercial clients are welcome. Call us at (208) 255-2233 to talk about a regular arrangement that fits your turnover schedule.
Tips for Handling Common Summer Stains
- Sunscreen: Pre-treat with dish soap or a stain remover before washing. Sunscreen is oil-based and needs degreasing before it’ll come out.
- Grass: Cold water and a pre-treatment. Avoid hot water — it sets grass stains.
- Lake water/algae: Wash promptly with warm water and a full detergent cycle.
- Campfire smoke: Soak in a baking soda and water solution for 30 minutes, then wash normally.
- Sweat: Pre-treat with white vinegar or enzymatic detergent before washing.
Machine Capacity Matters in Summer
Summer gear — beach towels, sleeping bags from camping trips, bulky outdoor blankets — often doesn’t fit in a standard home washer. Our X-Large front-loaders handle the big stuff without straining the machine or leaving things half-washed.
Spend Summer at the Lake, Not the Laundromat
