The Renter’s Guide to Laundry in North Idaho
Housing in North Idaho has gotten tighter over the past few years. If you’ve recently moved to the Sandpoint or Ponderay area — or you’ve been renting here for a while — there’s a decent chance your place doesn’t have in-unit laundry. A lot of older homes, cabins, and apartments in Bonner County just weren’t built with washers and dryers in mind.
That’s not a disaster. It just means you need a plan. This guide covers everything a renter without laundry hookups needs to know about using a laundromat efficiently — and getting the most out of each trip.
First: Know What You’re Working With
Not all laundromats are the same. When you’re scoping out your options, look for:
- Machine sizes: A good laundromat has small, medium, large, and X-large washers. If you have comforters, sleeping bags, or bulky items, you need a large-capacity machine.
- Hours: Make sure it fits your schedule. Ponderay Laundromat is open 7 days a week, 8am–10pm, with last wash at 8:30pm.
- Payment options: Card and coin is ideal — you don’t want to scramble for quarters every week. We accept both.
- Parking: Free, easy parking matters when you’re hauling laundry bags. We’re right on US-95 with free parking out front.
Building a Laundry Routine Without a Machine at Home
The biggest mistake renters make is letting laundry pile up until it’s overwhelming. A better approach:
- Pick one day a week and stick to it. Treat it like any other errand. Saturday morning or Sunday evening works well for most people.
- Sort at home before you go. Bring pre-sorted bags — darks, lights, delicates — so you can load multiple machines at once and finish faster.
- Bring more detergent than you think you need. And a dryer sheet or two. Forgetting supplies is the most common laundromat frustration.
- Plan for 90 minutes. Two loads, washed and dried, takes about an hour and a half if machines are available when you arrive.
How to Do Multiple Loads Efficiently
One of the hidden advantages of a laundromat over home machines: you can run several loads simultaneously. Most people with in-unit machines do one load at a time — wash, dry, repeat. At a laundromat, you can run three or four washers at once, then move everything to dryers at the same time. What would take four hours at home takes ninety minutes.
- Load all your washers at the same time
- Set timers on your phone so you don’t leave clothes sitting
- Move everything to dryers simultaneously
- Fold while everything’s warm — way easier than folding cold laundry later
Big Items: Comforters and Bedding
If you don’t have in-unit laundry, washing a king comforter at home is basically impossible. That’s actually one of the best use cases for coming to a laundromat — our X-large front-loaders handle comforters, quilts, and sleeping bags without a problem.
The Wash-Dry-Fold Option
If laundry is a task you dread or just don’t have time for, our wash-dry-fold (WDF) service might be worth it. Drop off your bag, we wash and fold everything, you pick it up within 24 hours. Pricing starts at $1.75 per pound with a $15 minimum. For a lot of renters, doing this once or twice a month is genuinely worth the cost compared to the time it takes.
